Iro And Buba

Beginners Sewing – Nigerian Iro And Buba

Iro and Buba
/ee-raw and boo-bah/

Think of your Iro or Wrapper like a wrap skirt; it is fastened around the waist and it can go all the way down to the ankles. Think of your Buba as a loose top with wide long sleeves and a round neck. Buba is a Yoruba word that means blouse. The buba is worn with the iro which means wrapper and gele which means head tie. The buba, iro and gele set is the traditional costume of the Yorubas in South Western Nigeria.

This Iro and Buba sewing is suitable for learners who want an introduction to sewing because they have been yearning to learn how to sew simple African styles.
Iro and Buba is a staple in some African wardrobes because they are simple and yet can be very dressy too; it is all about the fabric and the style.
This 4-hour project is an extremely rewarding project for anyone who has never used a sewing machine; not only will you be able to set up your own sewing machine, you would have made your very first African outfit. The most challenging part of this course will be the next, but we will be here to show you how to cut and sew a very professional round neckline.

AFTER THIS CLASS YOU WILL BE ABLE TO MAKE AS MANY OUTFITS AS YOU PLEASE

In this class you will be learning the following

  • Setting up a sewing machine
  • Defining basic parts and functions of a domestic sewing machine
  • How to sew a hem and a seam
  • Body measurements
  • Creating a simple pattern for your blouse
  • cutting your fabric and completing your garment

Once you have had a taste of this session, you can sign up for one of our comprehensive beginners’ courses.

We have put this wonderful tester session together for you. We have eliminated a lot of the tough stuff so you can walk out of this session, knowing you can actually make a complete outfit.
