Cloth Heart Chain

Remember the fun you had cutting out cloth dolls and cloth chains? Help your young crafter experience the same fun with a Valentine’s Day cloth heart chain. Jazz it up with some decorations in a simple AB pattern to work on her pattern recognition and geometry skills. She’ll think she’s just having fun.

The side benefit of this exercise is that your child is unknowingly working on their pattern recognition and geometry skills.Jazz it up with some decorations in a simple AB pattern to work on her pattern recognition and geometry skills. She’ll think she’s just having fun.

What You Need:

Spare pieces of fabric in three colours
Pencil
Scissors
Glue

What You Do:

Help your child fanfold a strip of cloth. There should be at least five folds (six flat surfaces). As they fold, make sure that the folds line up evenly or the hearts may not stay connected when they cut them out.
Next, use the pencil to help your child draw a heart, as large as possible, on this folded strip. Remember that the sides of the heart need to overlap the folded edges of the cloth.
It’s time to cut the strip of hearts out. Make sure your young crafter understands that they should cut on the pencil line and that both sides of the heart need to remain uncut.
Open the fanned hearts and let them admire the cloth chain they have made.
Help them cut smaller hearts out of the other two colours of cloth. If their chain has six hearts, they will need 3 small cloth hearts in each colour.
Encourage them to glue these smaller hearts onto their cloth chain, completing an AB pattern as they do so.
Have them add a little pizzazz to this simple project by decorating with glitter, sequins, or anything that sparkles. They can also make a cloth chain garland by taping together several shorter cloth chains.

If you want, you can use the finished project to decorate your home for Valentine’s Day!
